Just two years ago, phrases like “Sorry,” or “We don’t have that,” or “Maybe in the future we’ll have this device” were all too common when we talked about the Adaptive Skateboarding Frame (ASF). That all changed recently with the arrival of the first ASF in the United States — right here with our organization.
When we started our adaptive skateboarding non-profit, our mission was clear: to serve everyone — from competitive para-athletes with full independence to those who need complete support to be part of the skateboarding and action sports community. We learned how to maximize the use of traditional skateboards, WCMX chairs, and adaptive skateboards with mounted canes, but we knew there was still something missing.
To be truly inclusive, we envisioned the same adaptive skateboarding frame we’d seen used in Brazil by Skate Anima — a frame that allows individuals with limited or no mobility to stand, be safely harnessed, and experience the pure joy of skateboarding.
The first two years were tough. We met participants who could have benefited from the ASF, but without proper equipment, we struggled to safely support them. We always prioritize comfort and safety, but there were times we had to turn people away or tell a parent, “This might not work.” Those were heartbreaking moments — knowing someone wanted to be part of our skate community and we simply didn’t have the tools to make it happen.
Everything changed when the Community Health First Plan in San Antonio stepped up to support us. Their generosity made it possible to purchase our first Adaptive Skateboarding Frame. In spring 2025, we placed the order with Finch Adaptive Fabrication, and by late summer, we had the frame in hand and ready to roll.
Our first session with the ASF served a group of participants living with Cerebral Palsy — and the smiles said it all. The expressions of accomplishment, the excitement, the pure freedom — it was unforgettable. One moment from that day was captured and posted as a Facebook Reel, which went viral — earning 1.1 million likes and over 45 million views!
Since then, our ability to serve has grown in ways we couldn’t have imagined. The ASF has truly been a game changer, allowing us to welcome more people into the skateboarding community than ever before.
This frame represents more than just adaptive equipment — it represents possibility, inclusion, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to roll, ride, and feel the thrill of skateboarding.
